Umweltbundesamt

Umweltbundesamt GmbH (Environment Agency Austria, EAA) is Austria’s expert institution for environmental protectionand environmental control, established in March 1985. Umweltbundesamt has extensive experience in institutional capacity building, legal gap analysis and supporting the Beneficiary Countries in preparing for the required reporting requirements.

Umweltbundesamt, together with the Austrian Ministry for Climate Action, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology, has demonstrated itself as an important partner of the EU for capacity building in approximation/enlargement countries. For example, Umweltbundesamt has implemented two highly relevant projects in targeted region/countries, aiming at supporting the candidate countries/potential candidate countries in their accession negotiation and EU approximation efforts in climate.

Climate change mitigation and adaptation represent priority topics at Umweltbundesamt, with more than 40 permanent experts working directly in these fields. Umweltbundesamt successfully participated in institution and capacity building projects on these topics for almost all New MSs, Candidate and Accession Countries to the European Union.

Because of Umweltbundesamt's international engagement and their daily work, the experts have deep insight into international climate policy and are up-to-date with any new developments referring to monitoring, reporting and verification of greenhouse gas emissions and adaptation to climate change.

Development and delivery of complex training and capacity building programmes targeting different stakeholders (environment/climate change sector); coordination of teams, communication and information exchange platforms is another “horizontal” area for which our Consortium brings significant combined experience.

In addition, the company has extensive experience working in the Western Balkans and Turkey supporting environmental administrations on their way to adapt their legislation and regulation for future alignment with the EU. In Turkey, over the last 5 years NIRAS has implemented five projects for the Ministry of Environment and Urbanisation. In Serbia, Kosovo and Macedonia, NIRAS has contributed to supporting energy, environment and water management sector. On top of technical expertise, NIRAS has established a permanent presence in several countries in the region through its offices and will be able to provide necessary logistical and administrative support in course of the project implementation.
